How to Restore Headlights Lenses: How to Clean Car Headlights
Restoring headlights can significantly improve their appearance and functionality. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to restore your headlights:
Gather the necessary supplies
You'll need masking tape, a microfiber cloth, plastic or vinyl gloves, a headlight restoration kit (which typically includes sandpaper of various grits, a polishing compound, and a sealant), and a spray bottle filled with water.
Prepare the Headlight
Clean the headlight thoroughly using a mild soap or automotive cleaner to remove any dirt, grime, or residue. Dry the headlight completely before proceeding.
Wet Sand the Headlight
Start with the lowest grit sandpaper provided in the restoration kit (usually around 800 to 1000 grit). Wet the headlight's surface and the sandpaper with the spray bottle. Gently sand the headlight using back-and-forth, horizontal and vertical motions. Keep the surface wet while sanding. Rinse the headlight periodically to remove debris and assess your progress. Repeat this step with progressively higher grit sandpapers (1500, 2000, and 3000 grit) until the headlight surface becomes smooth and cloudy.
Polish the Headlight
Apply a small amount of the polishing compound from the restoration kit onto a clean microfiber cloth. Rub the compound onto the headlight in a circular motion, applying moderate pressure. Continue polishing until the headlight becomes clear and transparent. This step helps remove any remaining cloudiness and fine scratches.
Clean the Headlight
Wipe the headlight with a clean, damp cloth to remove any residue from the polishing compound. Ensure the headlight is dry and free of debris before moving on to the next step.
Apply a Headlight Cover
The best way to keep your lights from getting hazy or cloudy again is to apply a headlight film cover. Lamin-x covers are a great choice to take all the abuse for your lights and keep them looking clear and shiny for a long time.
