Using Ricochet PPF to protect the GTD Spirit of America

The Mustang GTD isn’t just another pony car—it’s a street-legal GT3 race car born from the vision of Ford CEO Jim Farley.

For racing veteran Seth Thomas, becoming one of the first owners of the Mustang GTD Spirit of America was the culmination of a rigorous application process and a lifelong passion for performance.

But when your car is wrapped in 815 horsepower and a body made almost entirely of carbon fiber, the first priority isn’t just driving it—it’s protecting it.

Owning a Mustang GTD isn't as simple as walking into a dealership.

Seth shares that the process involved a detailed application, personal videos, and months of waiting.

"I filled out the application... did a little video explaining what I’m going to do with this car," Seth recalls.

“Six months go by, you don't hear anything... then Ford selected me to get one of the cars.”

The Mustang GTD "Spirit of America" is a feat of engineering by Multimatic. While it starts life on a Mustang chassis, it is quickly transformed.

Everything else is custom-built for speed and lightness. This makes the car incredibly fast, but it also makes the body very expensive to fix if it gets damaged by rocks or debris.

Track Focused: Designed to conquer the Nurburgring, it features aggressive aerodynamics and Michelin Pilot Cup 2R tires.

Installing PPF on a car with the aggressive lines of a GTD is no small task.

Chris Wadle noted that the project took approximately 60 hours of labor to ensure a flawless finish, especially on the "Performance White" paint where debris and edges are most visible.

"Especially on a car like this, you're almost expected to have paint protection film," Chris explains. "Just a ceramic coating is not going to be enough. You’ve got to put some good PPF on there."
